A sweet victory by DLSU, or perhaps for many, redemption. DLSU rose from the ashes after being penalized for 1 year by the UAAP board. Nothing can stop the Green Archers from getting this year’s Championship.

Despite the many predictions that game 2 would be for UE, the DLSU Green Archers manage to stay on top of the game. DLSU’s strategy is to continue its formidable defense and force UE to make turnovers. Secondly, improve their free throw, and make extra effort in getting rebounds. UE’s game plan was to force DLSU’s big men to commit fouls so they can dominate the boards both defensively and offensively, and cut down its turnovers.

It was a very low scoring first quarter for both teams as the first point was only made after 3-4 minutes in the game. DLSU got the first blood sinking 1 free throw. UE then made an 8 to nothing run which startled the players from Taft. A timeout was called by Franz Pumaren to make some adjustments which enabled DLSU to bounce back to tie UE at 8 all, afterwhich, it was mostly DLSU leading the game.

Here’s the halftime stats.

DLSU vs UE Season 70 Game 2 Halftime analysis

WPvideo 1.10

Finally, DLSU has managed to improve its free throw percentages and surprisingly, leads in terms of rebounds. A huge improvement over the first games’ rebound percentages.

UE was able to do a good job guarding TY Tang who was instrumental during game 1. However, it wasn’t enough as other DLSU players step up their game.

As reported by the beautiful Tracy Abad.

Personally, I have never seen coach Dindo so furious and so mad in the 2 years that I have been working with them.
He asked them, “Are we scared?” over at the dugout, and then he pointed out what the warriors needed in order for them to win.

Number 1. They have to play as a team. They have to remove their selfishness once the get into the court.

Number 2. They should want to win he said that
they seemed like they are already quitting.

Number 3. They must be confident that they can win.

It was evident that the championship experience of the Green Archers really gave the edge. DLSU leading almost all throughout the game was not normal based on the past 3 DLSU vs UE games. This might have “startled” the UE warriors knowing the fact that this could be the final game of the season. They began playing “not to lose” instead of “playing to win” which was what they did in the eliminations.

During the 3rd quarter, UE was able to cut DLSU’s lead to 1 point. Coach Dindo was quite pleased by his boys’ performance but the Championship Series MVP Cholo and Casio were there to bring back a manageable lead for DLSU. Rico did a great job in rebounding together with about 2 more DLSU big players doing gang rebounds which lessened UE’s followups and tip ins.

Again, the UE warriors committed a lot of unnecessary turnovers (bad passes, 3sec violations, and travellings) . By mid 4th quarter, they’ve committed about 20+ turnovers as per the stats of the commentators (note: they had 31 turnovers last game 1).

The Magic 7

1. La Salle wins its 7th Title
2. 7th Decade of UAAP. Season 70. 7+0=7
3. 7th day of October
4. Year 2007
5. We beat Ateneo Twice(2) in 5 Games = 7
6. 2 is Greather than 14 ( 14 divided by 2 = 7)
7. La Salle has 7 letters
8. Halftime Score of DLSU is 34. 3+4=7
9. 3rd Quarter ends with DLSU at 52. Again 5+2=7
10. LaSalle has an overall record of 19 wins 6 loses. 19+6=25. 2+5 = 7
11. UE has an overall record of 14 wins and 2 loses. 14+2=16. 1+6 = 7
12. Pumaren has 7 letters
13. The replay was aired last night at channel 61. 6+1=7
14. Archers = 7 letters
15. Final Score is 73-64= 9. Nine (9) points - Game (2) = 7

Congratulations to the DLSU Green Achers for playing their best, and playing with their heart. It was a tough season, working against the odds, believing, and playing like there’s no tomorrow.

Congratulations to Coach Franz Pumaren for making it happen one more time. Leading an underdog team against UST, Admu, and finally a deep benched UE Warriors and winning against these great teams, is surely a testimony of his great coaching ability.

Finally, UE gets its first defeat of the season. It was a Pumaren vs Pumaren match with a sure victory by a Pumaren. Truly a big win and a proud moment for their parents.

Both coaches claiming to be the underdog. Franz saying that UE has a deeper bench and lots of time to reenergize, practice, and scrutinize DLSU’s games. Dindo says DLSU has a more experienced players with lots of championship experience.

UE was ahead almost all throughout the game but it all boils down to the last 4 and a half minutes of the game when the score was 58 all. UE dominates the rebounds but had over 30 turnovers as mentioned by the game commentators.

DLSU’s TY Tang, Casio, Cholo, and Rico were the key players with Rico getting that all important rebound that gave DLSU that 1 point edge while TY Tang got the best player of the game.

See it to appreciate.

De La Salle Green Archers 87 - 89 Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles

The bliss was short-lived, and the celebration was judged as premature. In another nail-biter between one of the most storied rivalries in UAAP history, Chris Tiu hit a go-ahead 3-pointer in the wanning seconds of regulation to win the game for the Blue Eagles, 89-87.

The Green Archers started the game slow and was absolutely sloppy on offense before Rico Maierhofer entered the game and sparked a bit of energy on both ends of the floor; but the Archers still found themselves down 15-9 late in the first quarter. The Archers then scored the next 12 points, courtesy of Bader Malabes and Cholo Villanueva, to take control of the game going into halftime.

As the third quarter started, the Taft-based squad threatened to break the game wide open as they built their lead by as much as 12 points in the quarter. The Eagles retaliated with the help of Yuri Escueta and the three-point line and cut the Archers’ lead to 1, 64-65, going into the fourth quarter.

In the final quarter, the basketball game turned into a seesaw battle as both teams refused to let up and constantly snatched the lead from one another time and time again; until time finally led to the game’s dramatic finish. Jv Casio proved once more his worth as one of the deadliest clutch players in the league by scoring 5 points in the final 2 minutes of the game, but missed the shot that mattered the most.

As the Blue Eagles led with a little over a minute remaining in regulation, Jv Casio drove to the rim and was fouled while making the basket to take the lead once more for the Archers, 87-86. After trading misses on the ensuing possessions, Yuri Escueta drove to the basket and kicked the ball out to a wide-open Chris Tiu for the game-winning 3-pointer.

JV Casio tried to tie the game with a fade-away shot from the top of the key, but the ball bounced off the rim. Rico Maierhofer acquired the offensive rebound and layed the ball back in the hoop, but the shot was waived off as videos showed that the ball was still in Maierhofer’s hands as time expired.

Rico Maierhofer led the Green Archers in scoring with a UAAP-career-high 24 points, followed by Cholo Villanueva who scored 18. TY Tang also contributed 15 points for the Green Archers. JV Casio, who is the Archers’ leading scorer with 15.2 points per game prior to this game, was scoreless throughout the game until he scored 5 points in the final 2 minutes of regulation on 1/14 FG shooting. The Green Archers also missed 15 free throws, which contributed to their unraveling.

The game had its share of expressing supreme passion for school pride as both sides experienced raging and uncontrollable emotions at times, which garnered various warnings, technical fouls, and unsportsmanlike fouls.

With the loss, the Green Archers fall into a tie with the Blue Eagles, losing their sole grip on the twice-to-beat advantage and currently share the position with their rivals.

The Green Archers will have to defeat the unbeaten Red Warriors on Thursday if they wish to keep their aspirations of clinching the twice-to-beat advantage alive.

Archer Radio returns once more this Monday to give you the latest happenings and mis happenings around the world of the Green Archers.

Archer Radio will be discussing and recapping the Archers’ first game for the second round when the Archers face the defending champions, the UST Growling Tigers (August 11, 2007). The Green Archers won in their first meeting, 90-86 in overtime. The Archers had to rally from a 16 point deficit early in the second quarter, and had to rely on JV Casio’s end game heroics to lift the team to victory. Be sure to watch the game, support the team, and join Archer Radio this coming Monday as they recap the team’s second meeting with the Growling Tigers.

This week’s guests include the great Ren Ren Ritualo, and possibly a former Green Archer who is still an unsure guest. They will be discussing their experiences when they were playing with the Green Archers.

Ren Ren Ritualo, who can be regarded to as one of the greatest shooters in Green Archer history, is one of only three players to have their jerseys retired by De La Salle (together with Lim Eng Beng and Kurt Bachmann). Ren Ren Ritualo led De La Salle to its feared and famed grand slam (4 straight UAAP titles), despite the depth and ability of the competition back then. Being one of the most honored Green Archers in history, Ren Ren Ritualo also belongs to the 25 Greatest Players of the PBL. Excelling in studies, athletics, and business, Ren Ren Ritualo is a true example of the student-athlete; The King Archer indeed.

Join Richard Del Rosario, Jason Webb, Dominic Uy, Micky Deles and Magoo Marjon on Green Archer Radio every Monday night from 8:00 to 9:00pm, only on 103.5 Max FM. They leave everyone green with envy.

After learning that the UAAP commissioner had recommended the rejection of the protest that the Green Archers had filed against the Blue Eagles, the Archers showed that they have indeed moved on by beating out the NU Bulldogs and claiming a firm grip as second place in the standings after the first round of eliminations. The Green Archer finished the first round with a 5-2 record, losing to only the UE Red Warriors and the Ateneo Blue Eagles simultaneously before winning their last 2 games of the round. Their seventh and final game of the first round did not come in a golden spoon however, as the Archers had to fight off the pesky Bulldogs to pull off a 85-81 win.

The game looked to be a route as the Archers took an early 12 point lead in the 1st quarter, but the NU Bulldogs showed the tenacity of their moniker, accompanied by 6 Green Archer turnovers in the quarter, and battled right back to steal a 1 point lead as the 1st quarter finished. The Green Archers got their heads back in the game after that, led by Bader Malabes’ 10 points in the second quarter, and led most of the game; although the Bulldogs kept things close as they hung on and hovered around being down only by 2 to 3 possessions throughout the entire game. In the final minutes of the game, the Bulldogs were looking to finally jump ahead and steal the victory from the Archers after Jahnke tied the ball game 75-75 with a go-ahead 3 pointer; until the Bahrain Bomber, Bader Malabes, dropped a crucial bomb of his own from beyond the arc with a little over 2 minutes left in the game to put the Green Archers further up and out of reach.

The De La Salle Green Archers were led by Bader Malabes, as the much hyped-about player finally had his breakout game after slumping through most of the season, with 18 points and 4 rebounds. The rookie, James Mangahas, delivered consistency once again as he posted another double-double for the Green Archers with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Pocholo Villanueva fouled out with 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists. Rico Maierhofer saw only 10 minutes of action due to characteristic early foul trouble, and finished with only 8 points and 3 rebounds. The Archers turned the ball over 17 times, way over their league-best average of 13 turnovers per game; but had a very balanced scoring output as 10 Archers scored at least 4 points, with 4 players scoring in double figures.

For the Bulldogs, Jonathan Fernandez had a fiery shooting stroke once more as he finished with 24 points and 7 rebounds.  Edwin Asoro did not display his usual dominant self, but played will nevertheless with 13 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 5 steals.

In the second game, the Ateneo Blue Eagles were thumped late by the UST Growling Tigers, 87-74. Jervy Cruz had another monster performance for the Tigers, with 19 points and 21 rebounds; and Khasim Mirza led the scoring with 25 points while shooting 6/7 from beyond the arc. The loss for the Eagles pulled them down from second place to a tie for third place with the Tigers; which gave way for the Archers to snatch second place with their earlier victory.

Black, Pumaren trade barbs on row

Monday, July 30, 2007
Black, of Ateneo, said he finds no merit in the La Salle protest, and that the infraction that took place in the second quarter of last Thursday’s game “had no effect” on the final outcome.

“Is there any merit on their protest? From my point of view there is none because Zai and Kirk did not play together, and it did not have any effect on the game,” the Ateneo coach said.

Pumaren then took his turn talking to the media, and questioning Ateneo’s stand on the issue.

“If we didn’t see anything, we wouldn’t have filed the protest. We want the truth to come out. There are different versions. There’s a pirated version,” he said.

The La Salle coach said it’s a very bad idea to say that the infraction had no effect on the final outcome.

“That’s a very good question whoever raised that. If that’s the case, then I can use my two foreign players in the first half because it does not have any effect on the game. Am I right?” he asked.

“Does it mean I can field both my foreign players at the same time until the third quarter when it does not have any effect on the game? Then let’s just change the rule,” he added.

“I thought I told him (Long) to come in for Zion instead of Jai. That’s what we call Zion – Zai. But immediately when the barker announced the substitution we recalled Kirk back to the bench,” Black said.

“Come on. Laterre is playing the No. 4 position. Does he mean Long will play that position. I’ve been exposed to basketball a long time,” Pumaren countered. – Abac Cordero

From the Lasallians’ corner:

Facts that need to be cleared up: Laterre and Long were both in the game at the same time for 5-6 seconds. Ateneo was not penalized for fielding in 2 foreigners at the same time, contrary to some beliefs; they were penalized with the technical foul for substituting Jai Reyes for Kirk Long while the game was running (substitution only allowed on dead-ball occasions). Black had realized that he fielded in two foreigners in the game at the same time so he asked Jai Reyes to quickly sneak in the game for Kirk Long.

The De La Salle community could care less about the win on the court, give it to the Ateneo Blue Eagles, they deserve it; we are not sour grapes. The protest is about the integrity of the UAAP Board. For over 15 years, we have been on the raw end of the paddle, from the 1991 forfeiture of the Finals to the eventual *champions FEU, skipping to the Cardona eligibility investigation which turned out to be squat, towards the two games which have been forfeited and replayed in the past few years to UE, and finally regarding the one year suspension and forfeiture of the 2004 title to the eventual *champions FEU (again) which the whole Lasallian community had to bear.

This is not revenge, this is to see whether the UAAP Board will remain consistent and adhere to the rules and penalties that are required to be implemented; or will we be on the raw end of the swinging paddle once again. Coach Norman Black justifies that the fielding in of two foreigners did not affect the outcome of the game at all so the protest is unnecessary and erroneous, but that is beside the point; that is absolutely nowhere near the point. The point is that the rule was broken, no matter how trivial it may be, and the rules have corresponding consequences. Otherwise, why should rules still exist?

Black is indirectly sponsoring the idea that breaking the rules is acceptable, as long as it does not have any effect on the game. Committing a sin is absolutely acceptable and nonpunishable, as long as no one gets hurt. Throw the basketball game out of context, the Blue Eagles had won the hard-fought game; what remains now is the infraction and the rules that follow. The infraction was absolute, and pictures and videos prove the truth. The only thing that is left to be served is justice, should it come or not. We protest not for victory, but for the integrity of the rules at hand. Go ahead, give us the loss, but give us the peace of mind that justice is served as well.

Should the UAAP Board decide to slit the throat of rules and integrity all at once, then we congratulate Ateneo for not only winning the game on the court, but for getting away with bloody murder as well. Coach Franz Pumaren should then blatantly mock the UAAP Board by fielding in Ferdinand and Batricevic (on crutches) for 10 seconds and then pulling them out at once; we would be breaking the hard-coded rule, but it wouldn’t matter since it did not affect the outcome of the game.

Love it or hate it, the rules are the rules. Either you follow it, you die, or you sell your soul to the devil.

Animo La Salle!

After letting a big game slip away from their fingertips a few days back, the De La Salle Green Archers were met by another equally huge game at their disposal. The Green Archers faced the defending champions, UST Growling Tigers, with the task to somewhat prove whether or not the Tigers would have won last year’s championship or not had the Green Archers played in the tournament. The Archers proved their case, and won 90-86 in overtime.

For the first half of the game, it looked exactly like the Growling Tigers had their foot on the accelerator as well as on the point that the Archers do not matter whatsoever to their championship campaign, as the Tigers took as much as a 16-point lead late in the 2nd quarter. It seemed like the Archers were on their way to the team’s 3rd straight setback, as the Tigers outplayed them in all aspects of the game to push the lead higher and higher until it felt insurmountable.

However, the Green Archers ignited a furious rally in the third quarter, with much appreciation to the stifling full-court press for which the Growling Tigers had no answer for, to cut the lead to 2-points by quarter’s end. The fourth quarter saw the reemergence of lost Archer, Ty Tang, as he drained crucial baskets with his patented pull-up jumper in transition, as well as huge bombs from beyond the arc. Despite shooting bricks for well throughout the entire game, JV Casio’s offense also decided to show up late in the 4th quarter, with probably the most important shot of the game stemming from his drive through the left lane against the whole UST team for the game-tying lay-up with 2.6 seconds remaining in the game. The Archers pulled away late in overtime to secure their win, as well as breaking their 2-game losing streak.

The Green Archers were led by Ty Tang’s 23 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. JV Casio, whose offense was a no-show until the crucial stages of the game, had 14 points and 5 rebounds. James Mangahas posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. PJ Walsham, Rico Maierhofer, and Ferdinand fouled out for De La Salle, and Brian Ilad left the game due to injury; the remaining big man of De La Salle, Kish Co, stayed alive in the game holding on to 4 personal fouls. The whole Archers team, including Coach Franz Pumaren, sported shaved heads; an act of bonding the team since losing their last game to Ateneo.

The Growling Tigers were led by another monstrous performance by Jervy Cruz, who had 22 points and 18 rebounds. Their floor general, Japs Cuan, fouled out with 6 points and 6 assists; which cost the Tigers dearly in overtime with no one to dictate the offense or break the feared full court press of De La Salle. The UST Growling Tigers have not defeated the De La Salle Green Archers since Game 2 of the 1999 UAAP Finals.
